National Coordinator Farzad Mostashari, MD, urged an audience at the annual Allscripts Client Experience Conference Monday morning to pick a health problem - stroke or heart attack, for example - and "knock the heck out of it.""All of you out there, pick a target."As he has before, Mostashari reminded the group that "technology is not an end to itself." Better care for individuals and better care for the population, along with lower costs are the goals, he said.

As New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the evacuation of hospitals in low-lying sections of Manhattan in anticipation of Hurricane Irene's landfall, North Shore-LIJ health system began removal of patients from two of its hospitals and set up an emergency command center. In response to an evacuation order from the city and state, North Shore-LIJ's 775-bed Staten Island University Hospital began evacuation efforts Thursday night at its North and South campuses, Michelle Pinto, director of media relations for North Shore-LIJ, said Friday.

Healthcare insurer Humana has launched a pilot project aimed at boosting the care of its members with congestive heart failure. Humana will employ the Intel Health Guide to reach patients in their homes across the country.Humana CEO Mike McCallister unveiled the project March 18 at Humana Cares, the St. Petersburg program that provides personalized health coaching via telephone, care management and health education and support for approximately 123,000 Humana members.

Online messaging can deliver organized follow-up care for depression effectively and efficiently, according to a randomized controlled trial of 208 Group Health patients. The Journal of General Internal Medicine published the results online earlier this month.
