The USDA has announced that it is accepting applications for up to $17.5 million in grants to provide access to education, training and healthcare services in rural areas.

Under the organization's Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program, grants of as much as $500,000 will be issued for equipment and technical assistance. Eligible groups must provide services to a rural area, demonstrate economic need and be able to match at least 15 percent of the grant in their own funding.

Applications are due by Aug. 12, 2013.

Since the program began in 2002, the USDA has funded 1,400 projects. Last year, 58 grants were issued for projects in 36 states.
