Slideshow: Images of ATA from Day 1

By Brian Dolan

George Collier, Telcordia

Telcordia's Senior Scientist George Collier told attendees at ATA here in Las Vegas, "Voice calls are so yesterday -- I rarely use my Blackberry for calls compared to all the other things I do with it... the mobile is a ubiquitous companion that we can use ... to help deliver on the promise of participatory health care."

Mary Foto, The Foto Group

Mary Foto, CEO of The Foto Group tells attendees that the WSJ's recent editorial on home health technology should be a wake up call to the industry: Sure, home health services are expensive --maybe too expensive as the WSJ wrote -- but Foto said the people in the room at ATA know how to make it less expensive.

Fraser Edward, RIM

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion's Business Manager for Market Development in the Healthcare and Life Sciences Fraser Edward said there can be "NO COMPROMISE" when it comes to starting an mHealth solution with a privacy compliant foundation.

Don Jones, Qualcomm

Qualcomm's Don Jones asked his fellow panelists whether his mobile phone and IPTV at home would soon be able to do everything that the myriad telemedicine solutions on the ATA show floor purport to do. Probably.

Lance James and Chris Stakutis

e-TelMed CEO Lance James (left) explains: "I don't think we can change much [patient behavior] with text" messages. James said video is the key to successful telemedicine because video is what consumers think of when they think of telemedicine. CA's VP of Emerging Technologies Chris Stakutis (right) listens in but looks skeptical.

Nonin's Pulse Oximeter

The first (for a limited time) only Continua Health Alliance certified medical device, Nonin's pulse oximeter at work during an ATA executive roundtable. Continua's president Rich Cnossen hooked his colleagues, Douglas McClure, Jayant Parthasarathy and Horst Merkle up to the pulse oximeters for the Q&A session to help the audience determine who was telling the truth.

McClure (left) explains that Partners is already "sneaking" some language into its grant writing and will start including Continua interoperability demands in RFPs starting this Fall. McClure admitted how firm the demands will end up being is dependent on the number of Continua products at that time.

During his keynote address Monday, Colonel Jeffry Davies, U.S. Army, Acting Commander USAMRMC, describes the Army's partnership with AllOne Mobile for helping wounded warriors returning from battle, but never mentions AllOne Mobile by name.
